Education is the Answer to Racial Discrimination
Studies have shown that teacher expectations differ by race, economic status and national origin of students.
Racism is a leading cause of suicide among youth from the following minorities: African American, Asian, Latino and Native American.
Many social problems that affect almost everyone are often taken as isolated issues when in fact it is a chain that is forming and affecting more and more sectors.
One of the problems that affect a large part of society in this country is discrimination and racism. Did you know that it increases when the educational gap widens?
Racism and discrimination have become systemic as they are completely ingrained in society and the activities that take place in it. This problem has nothing to do with skin color, it has to do with the differences between individuals, physical, cultural and even moral. So, if we educate individuals from an early age that the world is diverse and multicultural, could it be eliminated? If only it were that simple, however, it is true that the role of education at all social levels, and especially in the younger generations, remains one of the best ways to curb the proliferation of racist and discriminatory discourses and to encourage intercultural exchanges.
It is also important to mention that it is not only about how you educate society and the values you instill in them, but also, education systems and educational institutions have an important role and a great responsibility to address this issue. From hiring teachers that reflect this multiculturalism, to modifying the curriculum to make it much more flexible and free of implicit prejudices.
Education is undoubtedly a tool to lead students towards a path of respect for cultural diversity, gender and more. But it can also, if not exercised positively, be the main cause of the formation of prejudices that lead to these problems.
Nowadays, school should not only be a place where knowledge is endorsed and students are graded depending on their performance, but also, it should be a space where equality is promoted in all aspects. To teach students concepts, skills, lessons and more that are based on reality, that foster in them competencies that help them be better, to enhance their capabilities.
From this place, we must fight stereotypes, discrimination and racism so that students can make the world a different place. Education must be the answer so that children and young people face a less violent world and can overcome the adversities and challenges they face.
Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we want to emphasize the importance of transforming the education system to one that is more humane, less closed, and that puts less labels on the learning path of each student. This is the only way to eliminate this issue that continues to affect new generations.
