Our Current Economy: A Setback for Education
- Only 10% of the students in the 146 universities in the country belong to the lower middle class.
- 85% of high school students complete their studies, while only 41% of college students graduate.
In the country, education is unevenly spread from the early years of schooling to higher education. Unfortunately, many of the opportunities that children and young people have today depend on the social status of their families.
Between 2020 and 2021, 2 million high school students dropped out mainly because of the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic, forcing them to leave school to work. And yet, the percentage of young people between 16 and 24 years old does not exceed 23%.
Also, the scholarship programs that students can access only benefit very few students from low-income communities. This problem is happening in the different school grades and even extends to higher education, keeping students away from the possibility of receiving a higher degree. In more concrete figures, only 7% of students manage to acquire a college scholarship.
In addition to this issue, budget cuts in the education system also directly affect students. The school curriculum becomes poor in concepts, and students do not have access to tools that create innovative educational programs and provide them with what they need to have a successful future in their university process.
What are the main reasons why students drop out of school?
In high school, according to recent studies, some of the main causes are:
- 57% due to economic difficulties.
- 29% due to disinterest.
- 14% due to mental health.
In college:
- 38% due to financial shortfalls for their university studies.
- 28% because they do not meet the established academic requirements.
- 13% have difficulties in integrating properly into the social life of the university.
These are just a few of the causes that interfere with student growth and development.
Today, it must be urgent to put an end to these problems and provide solutions that help students receive an education that incorporates all the necessary tools to face the challenges of their daily lives and make their way to finding better opportunities.
Raising awareness of these issues and having a strong and qualified education system, is ensuring that all Americans have the opportunity to acquire the skills they need to thrive.
